Susan Wellington

Susan Wellington was born in Sasebo, Japan to a Mississippi father and a mother with a strong artistic side. The family returned to Mississippi shortly after Susan's birth, and she has resided there ever since.

As a high school senior, Susan discovered her love of art under the instruction of Frances Braswell.  She attended Millsaps College and Mississippi College where she graduated with a degree in Art Education.  Following graduation, she spent three years teaching at Jackson Academy before returning home to start a family.  While her children were young, she began a career with the Jackson YMCA, which remains a passion.

Following the death of her mother and an "empty nest,"  Susan returned to her artistic roots and began building upon her prior training.  Susan has studied watercolor with Laurel Schoolar, Wyatt Waters, Sharon Long, and Janet Rogers.  Bob Tompkins has been her primary mentor in oils, along with workshops under Joe Anna Arnett, Lucy Mazzaferro, Roger Dale Brown and Patience Heyl.  Susan paints from life, relying on scenes from her travels and her Mississippi  home for inspiration and subject material.  She  paints weekly with the Flowood Painting Group and at Bob Tompkins Studio in Gluckstadt.

Susan currently shows her work at several respected galleries.  Her work has also been seen in shows throughout the metro Jackson area and has been featured in both the Flowood Compass and Brandon Compass magazines.  Her paintings hang in private and corporate collections across the country.

In her spare time, Susan enjoys reading, gardening,  traveling, and spending time with her husband, children, and grandchildren.
