Selden Lambert, PhD

Selden was born in Greenville, SC and grew up in Columbus, MS with her grandmother.  Her earliest memories are of her grandmother creating the costumes for Miss Pohl's dance programs at the "W".  Selden graduated from MSCW (MUW) with a major in Psychology.  She then achieved her Master's Degree at MSU.  After a career in rehabilitation counseling, she returned to MSU for her Ph.D. in Criminology and Counseling.  She enjoyed private practice plus contract work with the court system, working with juveniles and their families.  Unfortunately, health problems forced her to retire.

Facing medical retirement from a 30 year career in Counseling and Criminology, Selden plunged once again into her love of creative expression such as mixed media paintings, found object creations and art therapy.

When Selden began painting in the early 70's, she was inspired to paint seascapes and local scenes such as historic landmarks and depots.  As she grew busier with a rehabilitation career, then graduate school and private practice, she began writing poetry, which adapted more to her time-limited schedule, penning four books of poetry.

Following a catastrophic illness in 1990, she began painting again, but in an entirely different manner.  She says it was as if she'd begun a second life and "the sky's the limit", resulting in a much freer style.

Selden says, "If my work is to be categorized, it would probably be described as re-emerging somewhere between the boundaries of outsider art and abstract, with occasional conventional touches.

"Regarding sculpting, quite some time may transpire before all the pieces come together to complete that particular work.  Other times, fragments just fall into place as if they had been waiting to be reunited.  There is a powerful intrigue about cast-offs.  What were they in their other life?  Where did they come from?  And surely there must be a purpose to their existence."
